When To Visit The Cloud Forest in Costa Rica
The best time to visit the cloud forests of Costa Rica, including Monteverde and Santa Elena, depends on your preferences. The dry season (December to April) offers clearer trails, less rain, and better visibility for spotting wildlife, making it the most popular time for visitors. However, the green season (May to November) brings lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and an even more mystical experience as mist drapes the forest. Birdwatchers may prefer the March to May period when the iconic Resplendent Quetzal is most active. Since cloud forests are humid year-round, bringing waterproof gear and layered clothing is recommended no matter when you visit.
How To Get To The Cloud Forest
Getting to Costa Rica’s cloud forests depends on which destination you’re visiting, with Monteverde and Bajos del Toro being among the most popular.
- Monteverde Cloud Forest: The closest major airport is Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José. From there, you can rent a car, take a shuttle, or book private transportation for the 3.5 to 4-hour drive. The last stretch of road leading to Monteverde is unpaved, so a 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.
- Bajos del Toro Cloud Forest: Located about 1.5 to 2 hours from San José, this cloud forest is more accessible by car. The roads are well-paved, making it an easier drive compared to Monteverde. Private transfers and rental cars are the most convenient ways to reach Bajos del Toro.
