When To Visit Drake Bay
The best time to visit Drake Bay largely depends on your preferences for weather and activities. Here’s a breakdown:
Dry Season (December – April)
This is the peak tourist season in Costa Rica, offering sunny days, little to no rain, and ideal conditions for outdoor activities like hiking, wildlife tours, snorkeling, and exploring Corcovado National Park. The dry weather also makes it the best time for whale watching. Expect higher prices and more tourists during this time, particularly around Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter.
Green Season (May – November)
During the green season, Drake Bay experiences more frequent rain, especially from May to October, but the mornings are often sunny, and rain showers tend to be short-lived. This season is perfect for those seeking fewer crowds and lower prices. The rain makes the jungle more vibrant, and the wildlife is still abundant. The Best Way To Get To Drake Bay? Flight to Drake Bay Airport.
While you technically can get to Drake Bay by car or bus via an 8-9 hour drive from San Jose, our experts would not recommend it. The roads are unkind to people who are not familiar with the area, and many rental car companies won’t cover the insurance cost of driving through river crossings—many of which are flooded and uncrossable during the rainiest months. Instead, it is much quicker and more convenient to take a short domestic flight. Drake Bay has its own domestic airstrip, and many properties include airport transfers in their packages already as it is so common for guests to arrive this way. A flight from San Jose or Liberia to Drake Bay only takes about an hour, and it’s a great way to experience Costa Rica from above!
