Cahuita National Park | Southern Caribbean Coast
Cahuita National Park on the Southern Caribbean Coast has one of the largest living coral reefs (with over 35 species of coral) in Costa Rica. Make the trek about 2.3 miles to Punta Cahuita, one of the best snorkeling spots in the park. Expert tip: plan a visit in the drier months of September and October, when the south Caribbean coast sometimes experiences a mini dry spell as other areas of the country experience heavier rains.
Caño Island Biological Reserve | Osa Peninsula
There are several beautiful locations around the Osa Peninsula at which scuba divers—both novices and seasoned veterans—go beneath the surface to experience an entirely foreign world. Yes! Diving off the Southern Caribbean Coast is great for beginning divers because the coral reefs act as protective barriers. There is also a lot to explore for more advanced divers as there is a lot of unchartered water here. Guided diving excursions are available all along the Pacific Coast as well for all levels. We do recommend booking a diving or snorkeling tour with a professional guide to make the most of your time and for safety reasons. The rougher waters of Cocos Island are recommended only for advanced divers.
Costa Rica is not considered a world-class snorkel destination, but Cahuita National Park does protects the largest coral reef on the country’s Caribbean coast. On the Pacific Coast, coral reef is harder to come by. Still, it is possible to see some reefs around Caño Island and Catalinas Islands.
One of the most common places to spot sharks in Costa Rica is on a snorkeling day trip to Cano Island off the coast of the Osa Peninsula. Day trips can be easily arranged in advance of travel for visitors of most lodges. It’s also accessible from the South Pacific Coast area of Dominical/Uvita.
