Best Costa Rica Diving & Snorkeling Spots

Thanks to the warm coastal waters, diving and snorkeling in Costa Rica can be a magical experience. Though it doesn’t rank among the world’s top diving and snorkeling destinations, travelers can still expect a fun day on the water with every tour. Divers may find themselves among the ‘big animal’ sightings — including whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, and the occasional humpback whale. If scuba diving isn’t your cup of tea, snorkeling is a great way to leisurely explore the underwater scenery.

There are suitable Costa Rica diving and snorkeling spots for beginners and experts. The following are the best destinations to experience diving and snorkeling on your Costa Rica vacation.

Cahuita National Park | Southern Caribbean Coast

Cahuita National Park Snorkeling

Cahuita National Park on the Southern Caribbean Coast has one of the largest living coral reefs (with over 35 species of coral) in Costa Rica. Make the trek about 2.3 miles to Punta Cahuita, one of the best snorkeling spots in the park. Expert tip: plan a visit in the drier months of September and October, when the south Caribbean coast sometimes experiences a mini dry spell as other areas of the country experience heavier rains.

Caño Island Biological Reserve | Osa Peninsula

8 BEST COSTA RICA DIVING & SNORKELING SPOTS
Exploring Cano Island from Aguila de Osa Inn

There are several beautiful locations around the Osa Peninsula at which scuba divers—both novices and seasoned veterans—go beneath the surface to experience an entirely foreign world. The Pacific Ocean’s clear waters offer visibility of anywhere from 30 to 100 ft year-round, ensuring visitors to Costa Rica’s underwater world always get an unobstructed view of the vast variety of marine life they’re swimming with. However, no other place more unique scuba diving spots than the Caño Island Biological Reserve. Be on the lookout for white-tip reef sharks, bull sharks, spotted dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles, and colorful schools numbering in the hundreds. Because of Cano Island’s status as a biological reserve, there are five designated diving locations and only ten divers can be in the water at a time.

The Gulf of Papagayo is a wonderful snorkeling destination thanks to its bay-protected inlets with calm water. Despite being a luxury resort area, the Papagayo Peninsula retains its natural integrity as a great base for snorkeling and diving. Enjoy a snorkel of the local waters or head further out to places like the Bat Islands for more serious diving.

Gulfo Dulce for Snorkeling | Osa Peninsula

8 BEST COSTA RICA DIVING & SNORKELING SPOTS

The calm Gulfo Dulce on the Osa Peninsula has both unique marine and terrestrial ecosystems, making it the perfect destination for those who love wildlife on both land and sea. It’s also home to a significant population of spinner dolphins, so you might catch an impromptu circus performance during your snorkeling adventure! Recently, efforts have been made to encourage the growth of reefs in the Golfo Dulce, inviting more marine life than ever before. Experience these tranquil waters from select rainforest lodges like Playa Cativo and Playa Nicuesa.

Sail & Snorkel Tours

One of the best ways to experience casual snorkeling is on a half-day sailing tour. These outing take place on a catamaran or other sailing vessel, offering drinks, snacks, and sometimes lunch or dinner. The sailing experience allows for time to swim in the warm waters of the Pacific and catch a glimpse of the underwater eco-system. These sail & snorkel tours are available from Guanacaste, Manuel Antonio, and select destinations on the Nicoya Peninsula.

Costa Rica Diving & Snorkeling FAQs:

Is Costa Rica good for beginning divers?

Yes! Diving off the Southern Caribbean Coast is great for beginning divers because the coral reefs act as protective barriers. There is also a lot to explore for more advanced divers as there is a lot of unchartered water here. Guided diving excursions are available all along the Pacific Coast as well for all levels. We do recommend booking a diving or snorkeling tour with a professional guide to make the most of your time and for safety reasons. The rougher waters of Cocos Island are recommended only for advanced divers.

Are there coral reefs in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is not considered a world-class snorkel destination, but Cahuita National Park does protects the largest coral reef on the country’s Caribbean coast. On the Pacific Coast, coral reef is harder to come by. Still, it is possible to see some reefs around Caño Island and Catalinas Islands.

Where can I see sharks in Costa Rica?

One of the most common places to spot sharks in Costa Rica is on a snorkeling day trip to Cano Island off the coast of the Osa Peninsula. Day trips can be easily arranged in advance of travel for visitors of most lodges. It’s also accessible from the South Pacific Coast area of Dominical/Uvita.
